Construction and drones, how they work together on a jobsite

Modern technology is the need of the day. The industry and our businesses will not flourish if we do not accept technology as a part of our daily lives and the incorporation of it in our businesses will take it to the next level. The growth of the business is to a larger extent dependent on how open we are in adopting technology in our lives and simultaneously in our business. For people who are owners of big construction companies, they might find it extremely difficult to go to every jobsite that is running parallel in different places of the state. It is virtually impossible for him to make a trip to each of its jobsite if they are located in different cities and states. So what can he/she do to get an updated report?

Well, he/she has 2 options. They can either rely on the reports that are sent to them by their men/women or can put in a camera to check in the status of the work in a timely manner. Now again it is not possible to put cameras all over the site and the cameras will all be stationed at one place. They will not be moving which will not portray the correct picture. This means that installing cameras at different locations on the jobsite will not do any good to them as long as they have something that can move throughout the location and can give live updates to him. Here comes the importance of drones. These flying machines can be used to get live pictures of the work happening on the jobsite. The camera of the drones will be always rolling allowing the business owner to see all the progress that is happening on the site and then compare it with the report he/she has received. It is just that the drones are used to provide ground report which can be then compared with the report he/she has on his table.

Allows you have better control on the project while you are holidaying/vacation:-

It is a fact known to every person in the construction industry that owners of big construction houses do not get to spend quality time with their family. It is always business for them and at the end of the day they are so tired that they have nothing left for the family. Now suppose that you have a long planned holiday/vacation and this time you have decided to finally take your family for a vacation. However, you also have an important project going on whose progress you can’t miss to check. You can make use of drones to catch live pictures and correspond with your employees on the ground. In this way you can spend time with your family holidaying in Hawaii and also keep a close watch on the progress of the project.

Using drones can prevent delays in the project:-

By getting regular live pictures, you will be able to identify mistakes happening on the jobsite. You can jump in straight and point it out to the respective supervisor and ask him to correct that rectified. Had this skipped your attention, it could have taken the project on a ride and have caused delays in its completion.

Make sure that the raw materials are there in the jobsite on time

For any industry to survive, receiving raw materials on time is a must. They are probably the second most important resource after human resource because as long as the raw materials are not there, the labor force may not move an inch forward and the work will remain pending. Due to this reason, it is quite imperative for the person in-charge of the stocks to ensure that the raw materials are always available and when he finds that they are running out of stock, order them in advance so that the labors do not have to wait for it come and leave their work pending. The importance of raw materials is felt mostly in the construction industry. This sector in particular will be unable to work if they do not have the stock of raw materials with them. They perhaps understand the importance of raw materials better than any other industry.

Simultaneously, they do not just have to depend upon on type of raw materials. In a construction jobsite, they require different types of raw materials to get the desired result. So the person who is in- charge of keeping a stock of the raw materials need to absolutely sure that he has all in place and in case if there is a deficiency of any stuff that needs to be ordered well before time. In the construction sector, the stock of raw materials is kept by the site engineer. Though they participate in many other things, this becomes major part of their portfolio. Their annual appraisal is also determined on how carefully they have managed their part of job and the kind of onus they have shown. Their promotions are also based on this work. Mostly, this one carries a major point as far as their growth is concerned in this industry.

Must keep the stock of raw materials on weekly basis:-

You may never know when the raw materials are out of stock. When the construction in the jobsite is in full swing, they just use everything they have and there is a higher chance that you may run out of stock. This is why it is recommended that you keep monitoring the stock on a weekly basis. If you can manage to check it more frequently it will be better but anything more than a week can be risky.

Liaise with several vendors:-

When it comes to ordering raw materials the site engineer have to get in touch with many vendors to procure different types of raw materials. It is never that one particular vendor will deal with all kinds of raw materials and this is why developing rapport with several vendors is a crucial one. Also, many a time, some vendors may themselves run out of stock. In this situation, he needs to get in touch with some other vendor. This means that the person who is in-charge of keeping stock of raw materials need to know all possible vendors in the city so that if one runs out of stock, he can get the materials supplied from some other vendor. Liaison with several vendors forms part of his work and he needs to be the best in it.

Crane Hand Signals on the Jobsite

It is not that the operator does all to operate heavy equipment. At times, it is also the guy who gives signals to the operator and asks him to do what he wants him to do. Especially when the operator is working on a crane, he is more dependent on signals coming from the man he can see. He has to work precisely on those signals and can’t afford to do things on his own. Therefore it is necessary that there is a good understanding level between the operator and the man who gives signals to him.

They should be in sync with each other and the operator should not have any problem in comprehending the signals he is getting from the man in front of him. He needs signals because it is not possible for him to judge things properly and for which he needs a helping hand. Now the helping hand need not be in the form of somebody working along with him inside the cabin. He requires someone who is outside the cab and guides him all along to do a particular job which he can’t do sitting alone inside the cabin.

Now when an operator does requires a man to give him signals. He requires him the most when he needs to either load or unload a heavy thing and his view is obstructed by an object. This means that he can’t see his intended path and therefore needs someone who can guide him there. The most common and preferred form of signal used is the hand signal. The operator in this case does not want to rely on any gadget and want a person to guide him. He may not be as comfortable with a gadget and if he is not comfy with something he can’t complete a critical thing with accuracy. Moreover, as mentioned earlier there needs to be a good understanding between the signaler and the receiver. If by any chance the co-ordination between them goes wrong, it may have serious repercussions.

At a point in time, there should be only one signaler. There should not be multiple people giving signals to the operator. He may get confused if there are multiple signals given to him and end up in a disaster. Also not any person should be given the work to give signals to the operator. Only a person who is qualified and knows which signal means what should be assigned this job. Different gestures have different meanings and the signaler should be aware of every signs. Also the operator should have thorough knowledge about signals so that he can comprehend it well and act accordingly.

If there is a change of signaler that should be informed to the operator and the signaler should also wear the badge which indicates that he is now authorized to give signals. Ideally, it is recommended to have one signaler for one operator. The operator should take one signal from no matter who gives it and it is the STOP signal. If the signals are followed religiously, then the chances of accidents happening will be drastically reduced.

Safety protocol one needs to follow in a construction site

A construction site encounters damage and destruction to concrete as well as use of heavy equipment. It is very likely that unfortunate events and accidents occur on a construction site. Therefore it is very important to maintain certain safety measurements on the site so that no mishap takes place due to the construction.

Most common accidents that take place on the construction site are:

  • If someone falls to the place where excavation has been done and there has been a collapse, then there can be a serious threat to the life of the person.
  • There have also been events where workers get stuck into the material that has been poured into the hollow in order to fill the excavation.
  • Heavy equipment driven into the excavated zone can also cause severe damage by bringing a collapse to the site.
  • Heavy equipment emitting harmful fumes can also cause accidents.
  • If there is a flood on the construction site, it is very likely that many accidents can occur.

Safety measures:

  1. If there is an excavation or trench, it should be made sure that the sides of the excavation are sloped to a 45° angle. To prevent any collapse, the trench should be supported by timber.
  2. For stopping the vehicles or heavy equipment from sliding into the trench, a stop block that is well anchored should be placed.
  3. Lights are very important at a construction site. Inadequate light causes many accidents and a little care can stop them very easily.
  4. To make sure that there is no possibility of the workers to fall from the construction heights even if they slip from the edge, there should be a well knit net platform spread adjacent to the building that will save them.
  5. In case the workers are working inside the excavated site, and there is a flood, or a poisonous fume generating inside the excavation, it is very important that there is an easy and swift way out from the excavation. At every frequent gap, there should be a ladder to escape the trench in emergency.

Other safety measures:

When the workers are working in the excavation, many a times accidents occur due to the storage of materials on the surface of the trench. Heavy load of these materials makes the timber support lose their strength or even the side walls also lose their support and there occurs a slide of the walls and all those construction materials into the trench. So, construction materials should be kept away from the excavation sites. Workers should work as a team, so that if there is any mishap, the others can at least try to save them. Signalling system must be very strong. First aid and ambulance must be available at the construction site to manage any damage or loss. All the heavy equipment like excavators, cranes and others must be checked before use. Trained and professional workers only should working at the construction site.
